Production of Watchmen
This much-awaited trailer of the film adaptation of the hit comic book series already has fans waiting with lots of anticipation. The film is set in Alternative America in 1985, with the only difference being Caped and costumed superheroes. But unlike most stories with superheroes who have superpowers, only the characters in the Watchmen film have clear superhuman powers: Doctor Manhattan. Most of the characters are only Caped Vigilante all with a dislike for crime and criminals.
Alan Moore doesn’t want his story to become a film. Even when asked about this, he points out the incompatibility of the two very different media stories. A comic book can easily be flipped to the previous page, to check about past lines and dialogue, giving readers the opportunity to compare lines and analyze plot progress. Watching movies, on the other hand, leaves the viewer not much choice in dialogue and lines. After the line is spoken and you’ve heard it, that’s all. Also, a comic book allows one to stare and study a particular scene or check details as long as he likes. But in the film, this time is lost, with the viewer being forced to take all the details displayed by a scene. For Moore, the pleasure of reading comic books is sitting comfortably in a chair, while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Indeed, the experience of enjoying comic books is in stark contrast with enjoying films. Being alone and calm are the two best things needed to enjoy the comic series, while films are better seen with the company.
Let’s break down the Watchmen universe
Fortunately, the director choosing to direct the Watchmen film is Zack Snyder, the Director responsible for directing film adaptations of 300, which is also based on a comic book. Moore does not want to be involved in developing and making this film adaptation of his story, citing examples of films that are far from their comics. While in charge of directing this, Snyder based his decision and worked on the actual comic book itself. He uses this as a storyboard, even claiming that the script is only a guide and that graphic novels must primarily regulate the process of filmmaking. There have been cases where Snyder found himself at odds with film production. They want the film not to be so long, but Snyder won’t compromise the scenes that need to be placed in the film. Film-wise, a few shots can be safely removed but to be as true for comic books as possible, Zack Snyder feels that they should still be included. In fact, some scenes must be there to appreciate the Watchmen.
The director wants to meet with the writer of this story to make the Watchmen film as true for comic books as possible. Unfortunately, Moore believes that comic book stories can hardly be told from cinema media. If it wasn’t for this belief, Moore would find himself a filmmaker more concerned about the author’s story than the director himself presenting. All of this shows that this adaptation will definitely be a treat to watch and enjoy, like your favorite comic book.
